Symphony Street
The BRSO offers three different interactive chamber music programs that combine music with core curricular subjects, as well as an instrument petting zoo program. Each Symphony Street performance is 45 minutes long, with one service including two performances. Programs include:
Petting Zoo
Introduction to the Instruments, K-5; limited to 50 students per session. Real instruments are brought before students, explained and demonstrated. This is followed by break-out groups in which students get to try the instruments.
Bach to the Future
Students trace the cultural development of music and its connection to art, architecture, dance, dress, and games in relation to historical periods and events. A timeline is constructed and then used as a projection of what the future might bring. The program addresses history and social studies skills in grades 4-12.
African-American Influence on Classical Music
African American composers have had a strong influence on serious music, not only in America, but worldwide. This program examines real examples of their compositions and influence on musical development and is especially suited to studies for Black History Month in grades 3-12.
The Lion and the Mouse
A brass quintet uses Aesop Fables to tell a story while introducing young children to the instruments in a very entertaining and light-hearted way. It is designed to reach students in grades K-2.
The fee for a Symphony Street program is generally $250, though additional funding is required through grants, sponsorships, etc. The BRSO encourages partnerships with School Boards, Art Councils, or other potential financial supporters in your parish to offer a Symphony Street program to as many constituents as possible, preferably within a concentrated time period.
